Ludo Hero is the traditional race board game Ludo, rebuilt for the browser by the HTML5 studio MarketJS and released in June 2019. Each player has four tokens waiting in a home base in one corner of a cross-shaped board, and the first to bring all four around the track and into the centre wins. The board uses four colours, blue, red, green and purple, and it is drawn for a portrait screen, so it fits a phone held upright as well as a desktop window.

Modes

From the start screen you choose between a game against computer players and an online game, and a player-count button switches between two-player and four-player boards. Before you start you can pick an avatar from a large gallery and type in a name. The online option tries to connect to MarketJS's own game server and waits for other people to join, so it depends on that server being available.

How to play

On your turn, roll the dice with a click or a tap.
A token can only leave home on a roll of 6. When a token is out, any roll lets you move it forward that many squares.
If more than one token can move, the ones you are allowed to move are highlighted, and you click the one you want.
Rolling a 6 gives you another roll, but a third 6 in a row ends your turn instead.
A token needs an exact roll to finish. If the number would take it past the end of its path, that token cannot move.

Landing on a square occupied by an opponent's token sends that token back to its base. Squares marked with a star are safe, and tokens resting on them cannot be captured.

Auto-mode and the turn timer

Each turn has a countdown shown around your avatar. The game's own tip explains that tapping your avatar switches auto-mode on or off; with it on, the game rolls and moves for you, which is handy if you want to watch a match play out or step away for a moment.

Tips

Use the star squares as resting points when an opponent is a few squares behind you.
When you roll a 6 with a token already on the board, decide whether a new token or a capture is worth more. A capture costs your rival a whole trip.
Near the centre, keep more than one token in play so a roll that is too high for one of them can still be used by another.
