Soccer Skills World Cup is a football game by Radical Play, released on Poki in 2022. You pick a national team and play full matches with simple drag controls, either through a cup competition against computer sides or in online matches against other players. Radical Play's other titles in the series include Soccer Skills Champions League and Soccer Skills Euro Cup.
Controls
Play is built around one drag gesture. Press and hold the mouse button, drag in the direction you want your player to run, and let go to kick. How far you drag sets both the running speed and the strength of the kick, so a short drag gives a soft pass and a long drag gives a hard shot. On a phone or tablet you do the same with your thumb; the game's own hint says to press and hold your thumb and drag to direct your player. The game runs in landscape.
Modes
- Practice: a practice game for getting used to the drag-and-release kicking.
- Play Cup: choose a team and work through a tournament. The knockout screens are labelled Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and FINAL!, and winning the trophy earns a congratulations screen.
- Multiplayer: the game searches for an opponent ("Finding opponent...") and you play a live match. There are four arenas, each tied to a trophy: Qualification Round, Bronze Boot, Silver Boot and Golden Boot, the last one played in the Final Multiplayer Arena. Getting into the higher arenas costs points, and wins earn points. In this mode every team has the same strength.
Teams and formations
The team list includes Argentina, Brazil, France, Croatia, Morocco, England, Japan, Senegal, the United States, Wales and Qatar among others. In cup play the sides are not equal: each has a strength rating, and the game praises you separately if you win the cup with a weaker than average team. Before kick-off you can adjust the shape on a Formation Tweaking screen. Teams start from their own line-up, with 4-3-3 the most common, while others use 4-4-2, 5-3-2 or 3-4-3.
Match rules
Matches have a half time and a full time whistle, and the game handles the set pieces a real match has: throw-ins, corner kicks, goal kicks, free kicks after a foul, and penalty kicks. The game also has a penalty shoot-out, which starts as best of five shots and then switches to one shot at a time, and an instant replay option.
Tips
- Use short drags to keep the ball close when running past defenders, and save long drags for clearances and shots.
- If a strong team feels too easy in the cup, try a lower-rated one for a harder run.
- In multiplayer, teams are equal, so the result comes down to how well you control the drag.
